Here at Custom Style Masks , we create and design several social gathering products; one of which are masks. We began production on masks out of necessity. Necessary for the business to stay open and keep people employed and necessary for everyone else to keep healthy from Covid-19. To me, the names are funny. Some don’t make any sense, while others fit perfectly which is sometimes funnier. Regardless the names are original and stick with me.
For example, one of our masks is called “United We Stand.”. It’s one of our more aptly named patriotic designs. It sticks with me because it’s supposed to remind me of America and how together we can accomplish anything. And I guess that’s true, but at the moment we are showing that divided, we do indeed fall.
If you’ve stuck with me this far, you can probably guess I’m referring to the death of George Floyd and the protests happening. I, like thousands of others, have felt compelled to do or say something in the wake of all this blatant racism. The murder of George Floyd was nothing new but that’s the fucking problem. He was killed by a police officer who was supposed to protect him while 3 other officers watched. Again those 4 men are not the exception they are just like many of their other brothers in blue who have also murdered black men and women.
I’m not going to assume they were innocent or guilty. I wasn’t there, I don’t know. But it doesn’t matter. They could have been guilty of everything the cop was accusing them and then some but those cops had no right to kill them. Whether guilty or innocent all have the right to due process. Like I said, you’ve heard this before. I’m not here to hammer that point again but I felt it necessary to say because I too have stayed fairly silent during most of the recent deaths.
My point is this, United We Stand. People that is literally the only way we can survive as a nation is if we work together. To be honest, I’m frustrated with every side. There’s folks who are angry and are tired with how everything’s going and have decided to riot and loot. There’s folks who are trying to keep the peace and see every protester as a criminal and don’t hesitate to shoot tear gas and flash bang grenades. There are some that are using this to earn political points. But there’s also people on those teams and more who are actually just trying to make the world a better place.
What I’m trying to say here is that we all need to listen more and empathize better. Again not all but a majority on each side is quick to assume the others’ ill intent. It’s a vicious cycle here if nothing changes. Stop assuming that the black man was guilty. Stop assuming all protests will lead to riots. And for the love of God stop assuming Trump has our best interests at heart.
As a business we had to change out of necessity. It wasn’t a bad thing. It was definitely difficult and stressful. But now we do more while still doing the good things we did in the past. My hope is that the U.S. Nation can also change. I know it won’t happen overnight and it may not look like what I’m envisioning. But we need to stop clinging to the past just because it’s been that way for hundreds of years. It’s ok if we realize there is racism in the judicial system. What’s not ok is if we don’t do anything about it.
